How to: Get cryptocurrency price alerts as email notifications
There might have been times where you have missed buying your cryptocurrency at the right price and at the right time, only because you hadn’t checked the news that day or simply because you could not track it all day long and you missed the price point from where you could have actually cashed in on the opportunity.
Times like these are so very common for most of the investors out there. Everyone has their such days and when it comes to the crypto world, this can be a huge price for one to pay, as the market is highly volatile as of now and the returns can be 10x times your investment provided that you invest at the right time.
But how do you get to know when is the right time? The market changes ever so quickly. Facing the situation once gives us a good lesson and a wonderful insight into the opportunities that have been missed. But getting into the same situation can be too painful.
How can we curb this? The price moves very fast and timing is very crucial here. You will have to keep a keen eye on the pricings here and you will need to be on top of the price movements if you are looking to make a great impact on the benefits of this volatility. It is literally impossible to keep a track of all the price movements and all the variations at every minute of the day.
But this can be solved by using some of the tools out there that can efficiently track the prices on your behalf and have yourselves notified quickly when the buy/sell price is all within your requirements. Most of these tools are quite technical which actually keeps the regular users at shore.
And what would be even great is having a tool that tracks all the price movements for us, notify us in real time and have all the data transferred on to an excel spreadsheet to use. Well, there is a tool that does the job for you and it is quite easy to use as well.
The name of the tool is “Track My Crypto” and the best part is that it is a Google Sheets Add-on. It allows you to add your favorite cryptocurrency on to a Google spreadsheet and the add takes care of all the work for you from there. You insert your target zone prices and the add-on simultaneously generates email alerts for you. It is all in all that simple. Very user-friendly. And extremely easy to use.
- Track cryptocurrencies using a single spreadsheet
- Mail alerts when the present price point is crossed
- Market values in one of the supported currencies
- Subscribe/unsubscribe anytime
- Change alert threshold price point anytime you want
- Auto refresh values on open
How to use
- Open Track My Crypto add-ons page
- Click on ‘Free’
- Authenticate the access to your Google account
- After the completion of the authentication, go to Add-ons → Track My Crypto → Add a Cryptocurrency
- Fill the cryptocurrency tracking form
- Submit to see your crypto listed
You shall begin to receive your e-mail alerts once your notifications are ON and your threshold is met. Once you start receiving your notifications, you can see view the price change and will be well versed to make an informed decision about your trades.
Remove Cryptocurrencies is just as easy as adding new cryptocurrencies on this sheet. Do the following steps to attain this easily – Add-ons → Track My Crypto → Remove a Cryptocurrency.
Then, select the type of crypto you intend to remove and hit the ‘Submit’ key. The crypto will then be removed from your tracking list and you shall no longer receive any sort of alerts for that.
Enable/Disable Email Notification
Each time you add a new cryptocurrency, the notifications for the same will be enabled automatically and you will be alerted from time to time on the same. This is by default. If you no longer want to receive the notifications and look to disable it, there are two ways in which you can do it.
- Go to, Add-ons → Track My Crypto → Stop Notifications.
When using this approach, all your cryptos will have their values noted and jotted on the spreadsheet from time to time. You just won’t be alerted on those. The drawback about this method is that you disable all the cryptos all at one go and not selectively. Hence it is an all or nothing option. Similarly, when you want to start the notifications of the same, you can enable it using the same method. It is that simple.
- Edit the ‘Notification Status’
This is the easier way, and that is to simply edit the ‘Notification Status’ Column manually in your spreadsheet and clear the status for the crypto of your choice that you want to stop receiving future notifications.
How it works
By using the help of CryptoCompare and Currencylayer API’s, the sheet tracks the price movements. The app runs the script in the background each hour and fetches the latest value of all the cryptocurrencies that you have added. This is done by consuming the CryptoCompare API and having it converted to the currency that you have decided to opt in for. It also has the sheets updated with the latest price values.
In case of any threshold breach when the notifications have been enabled , a mail will be sent to the owner of the spreadsheet. The threshold values can be changed at any time an the mail alerts would then be send accordingly. That is the best part about it.
Another thing is that the prices refresh automatically each time you open the sheet and you can even manually update the prices by selecting refresh under the Add-on menu.
It is good to have you informed that the tasks in the background can be run much more frequently than every one hour, but for a Google Add-on, the recurring tasks cannot run more frequently than once an hour.
Currently the Add-On only supports the following cryptocurrencies
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Bitcoin Cash / BCC (BCH)
